Upcoming shows Sept / Oct 2012

Posted on September 10, 2012 by lee

Yesterday I had a wonderful time playing originals and standards at Mudgee Brewery with John Stuart and his seven-string goodness guitar, with its lovely warmth and depth of tone.

I have some really exciting shows coming up next:

Tuesday 11 Sept: James Valentine Band, Sheaf Hotel, Double Bay 8pm
James Valentine (sax and bandleader), Gary Daley (keys / accordion), Peter Kohlhoff (bass), Nic Cecire

Sunday 16 Sept: The Power and the Passion – James Valentine Band, Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre, Penrith, 3pm
This brilliant show traverses wide musical ground, with the common theme of great Australian tunes, re-interpreted in the jazz genre – from the Divinyls to Daddy Cool, and many pit stops in between. VERY excited to be guesting on this wonderful show, with some of Oz’s best jazz musicians.

Sat 22 Sept: Private show – Tim Bruer (keys), Gary Holgate (bass), Andrew Gander (drums)

Sat 6 Oct: Bennett’s Lane – Elly Hoyt, Luke Howard, James Sherlock and friends
- Super excited about this collaboration with the Bell-award winning Elly Hoyt. Bountiful originals plus fresh takes on some of the greats, exploring the emotional and musical possibilities of two singer-songwriters in the jazz idiom. Bring it ONNNNNNNN.

Thurs 25 Oct: The Basement -The Power and the Passion – James Valentine Band.
If you missed this fabulous show at the Joan, come to the Basement and re-visit the biggest and best Oz tunes, re-interpreted in Jazz. Check out the review on this booking link:

  • The Music Oz Awards

Lee was thrilled to be selected as a finalist in the Music Oz Awards, and incredibly honoured to be nominated alongside such jazz luminaries as wonderful winner Kristin Berardi in the National Jazz Awards.

Gig @ 505

Many thanks to everyone who came to see us at Sydney’s 505 Jazz venue. It was an absolute pleasure and privilege to play with Tim Bruer, Jason Bruer, Lloyd Swanton and Toby Hall, who brought a whole lot of energy and a fresh take to the original tunes. Yay for music-making with wonderful musicians. We hope to do it again soon – stay tuned. :)

Stanford University Jazz Songwriting Residency with Rebecca Martin, Gretchen Parlato and Becca Stevens

I’m spending the first part of August 2011 in the presence of greatness! I’m a big Gretchen Parlato fan, and I also really love the original works of Rebecca Martin and Becca Stevens. All three are receiving accolades right now both individually and collectively for their fresh new perspectives and contributions to jazz and genres outside jazz. It’s all getting pretty blurry these days.

I’ll be spending a week workshopping the craft of songwriting with these masterful ladies, and I can’t wait to see what ends up coming out of it.

With any luck, another album’s worth of material for my next project!
